SOLUTIONS

Virtualization and server shutdown.

Shut down virtual machines, hosts, clusters and storage in order when the power fails, and bring them back when it returns.

An example sequence

Utility power fails at a site with a VMware cluster, two Windows servers and a NetApp system. The UPS goes on battery and the alarm reaches the team. When remaining runtime reaches the threshold you set, the shutdown event starts: application virtual machines by group, then vCenter, then the hosts after maintenance mode, then the Windows servers, then the storage. When utility power is stable again, the UPS output comes back, the servers power on and the cluster restarts.

VMware vCenter, ESXi and vSAN

Virtual machines shut down by group, vCenter last, then each host enters maintenance mode and powers off. vSAN clusters finish resynchronization first. When vCenter is already down, MayaUPS reaches each ESXi host directly.

Microsoft Hyper-V and System Center VMM

Standalone Hyper-V hosts and failover clusters shut down through the MayaUPS agent, and System Center VMM environments through VMM itself.

Nutanix AHV and Dell VxRail

On Nutanix, guest virtual machines stop, the cluster stops, then each Controller VM and host, with host power-off through Redfish. Dell VxRail clusters shut down through VxRail Manager.

Proxmox, XenServer, XCP-ng and OpenShift

Proxmox VE virtual machines, containers and nodes; XenServer and XCP-ng guests, then the pool hosts; Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization guests and nodes.

Servers and storage

Windows and Linux servers shut down through an authenticated agent, physical servers through their BMC (Redfish). NetApp ONTAP, TrueNAS, DataCore and NAS units with their own UPS client stop after the servers that depend on them.

Test, enable, restart

Each shutdown event runs a shutdown test with no action before it is enabled, and an emergency stop disables every action at once. After the outage, MayaUPS restores UPS output, powers servers on through Redfish or Wake-on-LAN and restarts clusters in order.

Frequently asked questions

Can one shutdown event cover VMware, physical servers and storage together?

Yes. One event runs every stage in the order you set, from virtual machines to hosts, physical servers and storage.

What happens if vCenter is already down?

MayaUPS connects to each ESXi host directly and shuts down its virtual machines, then the host.

Does MayaUPS restart the site after the outage?

Yes. Once utility power is stable, MayaUPS restores UPS output, powers servers on and restarts clusters in order.

Which servers need the MayaUPS agent?

Windows and Linux servers and Hyper-V hosts use the agent. VMware, Nutanix, VxRail, Proxmox, XenServer, OpenShift and the storage systems are reached through their own management interfaces, and physical servers through Redfish.
